National Party Candidate for Rangitata Andrew Falloon has welcomed the news a re-elected National Government will four-lane State Highway One between Christchurch and Ashburton as part of the Roads of National Significance programme.
"I'm absolutely thrilled. This is massive.
"It will have a hugely positive impact on travel times and road safety, benefitting not just Mid Canterbury, but also South Canterbury and the wider region.
"One of the largest new infrastructure projects undertaken in decades, it will have a transformative effect on South Island transport.
"Extending the road to four lanes has been a major focus of mine since I was selected as the National Party Candidate for Rangitata in April.
"It's great to have the support of the Prime Minister, Transport Minister Simon Bridges and other senior Ministers.
"I haven't given up on four-laning all the way to Timaru. I firmly believe that it will be required in the future, as the South Canterbury economy continues to grow and more freight goes through the Port.
"I'll continue to push for our fair share of new infrastructure spending if I'm elected as Rangitata's MP.
"Extending State Highway One to four lanes is a huge endorsement of Canterbury's growing economy, and shows the importance of having a strong local voice at the heart of a re-elected National Government," Falloon says.
